Doggies Go Green
My daughter and I will be bringing home our puppy on May 4th and I am determined to purchase eco-friendly products. Going “green” doesn’t have to be limited to us humans –canines can do their part too. After all, they share the earth with us! Here are some tips to a more greener, earth-friendly pooch–and planet!
*Purchase an eco-friendly toy online to make sure your pooch isn’t gnawing on any toxic plastics. Avoid cheap, imported dog toys. Did you know that many dog toys shipped in from other countries contain high levels of lead, cadmium and other dangerous toxins. Consider soft toys made from recyclables instead. www.westpawdesign.com
*If you are in the market for a new home for your pet there are also eco-chic dog homes now available. Made from untreated red cedar planks with beeswax waterproofing these deluxe homes are decked out with a rooftop garden. www.sustainablepet.com
*Purchase dog beds, and blankets made from recycled materials or organic fabrics. www.westpawdesigncom
*With all the scares that went on last year with pet food it’s important to feed your dog food that’s safe to eat. Purchase food made with organic ingredients. www.newmansownorganics.com or www.v-dogfood.com .
* To be more earth-friendly use biodegradable dog waste bags. Biodegradable bags break down in the landfill or even in a compost pile making your carbon paw-print as low as possible. Picking up after your pooch not only keeps your sidewalks clean but also helps keep down high levels of dangerous environmental pollutants. Scientists have been able to link high levels of nasty bacteria in streams and seawater to dog droppings left behind by their owners. www.poopbags.com
* Purchase eco-friendly supplies whenever shopping for your dog. Choose products that are made from materials that are biodegradable, have been or can be recycled, does not contain plastic, and has not been treated with flame retardants. Flame retardant chemicals are very hazardous to your dog’s health.
*Consider donating our dog supply rejects to a local animal shelter or rescue group in need. They can always use bowls, balls, blankets and brushes.
